Watch: Rehearsals for Crystal Pite’s new ballet

ROH Insight event exploring Crystal Pite’s new work for The Royal Ballet Flight Pattern was livestreamed for free via the Royal Opera House YouTube channel on 9 February 2017. It is now available to watch again on-demand.

Pite joined Senior Producer of The Royal Ballet’s Studio Programme Emma Southworth to share exclusive insights into her Royal Ballet debut.

The broadcast also featured Pite rehearsing sections of the ballet with members of the Company – Kristen McNally, Isabella Gasparini, Mica Bradbury, Solomon Golding, Calvin Richardson and Joseph Sissens.

Pite's large-scale ensemble work is set to Symphony no. 3 – the ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’ – by Polish composer Henryk GóreckiNonesuch Records’ 1992 recording of the piece is one of the best selling contemporary classical works ever committed to disc.

Pite is one of the most exciting contemporary dance choreographers of the 21st century. Since the early 1990s, she has created more than forty works for companies including Ballet British Columbia, Nederlands Dans, Paris Opera Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada.

Her company Kidd Pivot, which she founded in 2002, has won international acclaim for works such as Dark MattersLost Action and The You Show. Pite also won an Olivier Award in 2015 for Polaris at Sadler’s Wells.
